Great Salt Lake Selenium Standard
نویسنده
چکیده
The Great Salt Lake ecosystem is widely recognized to be unique and to have very high environmental and commercial value. Great Salt Lake is recognized regionally, nationally, and hemispherically for its extensive wetlands, and its tremendous and often unparalleled values to migratory birds. These values are derived from the lake’s unique physical features, including its immense size, dynamic water levels, diversity in aquatic environments, extensive wetlands and geographic position in avian migration corridors. These features create a mosaic of habitat types that are attractive to literally millions of migratory birds that use the lake extensively for breeding, staging, and in some cases, a wintering destination. Great Salt Lake also has a rich history of wildlife management activities that were initiated in the late 1890’s by private hunting clubs, but were followed by substantial state, federal, and private investments in conservation programs. Conceptual Model for Selenium Cycling in the Great Salt Lake
This document describes a conceptual model for selenium cycling in the Great Salt Lake. The document consists of four parts: A) Introduction to the problem & Overview (page 1) B) The framework of the model and underlying assumptions (page 7) C) Visual depiction of conceptual model (page 17) D) Relevant references supporting the model framework (page 22) During the Fall of 2005 a panel of nation...
متن کاملSelenium mass balance in the Great Salt Lake, Utah.
A mass balance for Se in the south arm of the Great Salt Lake was developed for September 2006 to August 2007 of monitoring for Se loads and removal flows. The combined removal flows (sedimentation and volatilization) totaled to a geometric mean value of 2079 kg Se/yr, with the estimated low value being 1255 kg Se/yr, and an estimated high value of 3143 kg Se/yr at the 68% confidence level. The...
متن کاملVolatile selenium flux from the Great Salt Lake, Utah.
The removal mechanisms that govern Se concentrations in the Great Salt Lake are unknown despite this terminal lake being an avian habitat of hemispheric importance. However, the volatilization flux of Se from the Great Salt Lake has not been previously measured due to challenges of analysis in this hypersaline environment This paper presents results from recent field studies examining the spati...
متن کاملBiostromes, brine flies, birds and the bioaccumulation of selenium in Great Salt Lake, ,Utah
Benthic organisms and substrates in Great Salt Lake, Utah, were sampled to measure selenium concentrations of prey organisms of the birds that utilize the lake for nesting and during migrations. The sampling was focused on stromatolite biostromes, as these solid reef-like structures cover approximately 23% of the oxic benthic area of the lake and are the principal habitat for brine fly (Ephydra...
متن کاملPreliminary Analyses of Selenium Bioaccumulation in Benthic Food Webs of the Great Salt Lake, Utah
Benthic organisms and substrates in the Great Salt Lake, Utah, were sampled during one week in June 2006 to test collection methodologies for biostromes and soft substrates and to get preliminary information on the selenium concentrations of benthic organisms. The sampling was focused on biostromes, as these solid reef-like structures cover 23% of the oxic benthic area of the lake and are the p...
